Our History

It all began in the summer of 1990 when Steve Rae gathered a group of six friends in his living room and posed the question… "Who wants to put on a show?" Stratford Community Players was born that night and our first production in December of 1990 was Scrooge, the Stingiest Man in Town.

Stratford City Hall auditorium has continued to be our home since that time. An official Board of Directors was formed in the spring of 1991. We continued that fall with a very successful production of Anything Goes and then in the spring of 1992, presented our first of many dinner theatres written by Rob McEwen. More musicals and dinner theatres followed over the next few years with such well-known shows as Sugar, Oklahoma, Oliver and Guys & Dolls.

For our 10th Anniversary, the group took on the challenge of the North American premiere of It’s A Wonderful Life, a musical based on the well known Christmas movie of the same title. In 2002, we presented the family favourite, Annie to sold-out houses and standing ovations every performance. Cabarets became popular with the group and were held for four years in the springtime and were called Spring Toon-Up.

For our 15th Anniversary, Brigadoon was chosen, and the show played to full houses and appreciative audiences. We are also much more involved in the community these days. SCP members can be see and heard singing Christmas carols downtown during December. We are also part of events like the Stratford Public Library's Night at the Library in 2007. And, as always, we donate a portion of our show proceeds each year to a charitable organization in the city.

Plans are underway for a smashing 20th anniversary production. You don't want to miss being involved or seeing the show!
